Lessons from the Lotuses

Since they arrived at our home on Mother’s Day, I have headed out to the pond multiple times a day to commune with the lotuses. They have become my teachers.

Here are some of the things I have learned from them:

1. Darkness does not define, it forges. The roots of the lotuses are deep in the muddy water. The buds are formed there. The darkness is crucial to their development.
2. Orient towards the light. From beneath the surface of the pond water, the lotus buds are drawn upwards by the calling of the light.
3. Everything unfolds in divine timing. The lotuses do not rush.
4. Turn inward and rest deeply . The lotuses close up completely each night to replenish themselves.
5. Each part of the journey has value. The lotuses are beautiful in each stage of their unfolding, and while they are drawing inwards.
6. Balance is found through the pulsation of opposites. The lotuses exist in a rhythmic cycle of certainty.
7. Know when to let go. After a few days of blooming, the lotus stem softens, and they surrender to the water once again.

It is no wonder these flowers are revered in the wisdom traditions. Their magnificent beauty symbolizes purity, enlightenment, self regeneration, the cycles of life.
